Star Trek – The Non-Trekkie Review

Watched Star Trek a-la J.J. Abrams , one word – NICE!

The movie had just the right amount of comedy, action and emotion to really engage me and bring me into a universe that I never really felt that I would ever step into. See, I’m a product of the 80’s and student of the 90’s and during my time I never really involved myself with Star Trek or Star Wars or anything else that had the word “Star” in it (exception: Starship Troopers, that was just bad ass). I didn’t really see the original Star Wars until I was WAY into my late teens (like 19 and a half) and Star Trek was completely out of the picture, so I went into this one pretty blank-slate.

For someone that knew nothing outside of a few catch phrases, I felt immediately connected to the characters and never once felt like I needed to be caught up. This sense of making a “movie for everyone” is what Abrams hinted towards on The Colbert Report shortly before he entertained Colberts’ comedic performance of his Romulan counterpart StPhan KolBareT (thats my best attempt at that name people! I dare you to try that sucker!).

All in all, the story-lines’ “departure form that normal story continuum” might make some die-hard purists unhappy but it opens the door to a whole new market of potential Star Trek fans. Potentials, like myself, that might have passed on the previous films given their high barrier to entry in the form of the narrative and character complexity now find ourselves enlisting as Cadets of the United Federation of Planets – yeah I said it AND I was wearing my Spock ears!

And now, some Onion!
